MDEC Meeting (September 2023)

The first MDEC (Mathematics Department Extension Committee) meeting was held in September 2023 at The Dining Room, Commercial Center, MSU, Marawi City.

The meeting flow is as follows:

1. Distribution of MDEC notepads to the members of the committee.

2. The Committee Chairperson provided copies of the STAR Extension Program Proposal and the Needs Assessment Survey Questionnaire given to the intended recipients of the program who are private higher education institution (HEI) academicians and researchers.

3. The Committee Chairperson expressed her appreciation for each member for accepting the committee membership. 

4. The committee was created primarily to draft the formal STAR Extension Program proposal to the highest administrative body of the Mindanao State University - Marawi City.

5. The STAR Extension Program proposal shall contain the following: (a) Title, (b) Target SDG (Sustainable Development Program), (c) Objectives, (d) Activities, and (e) Line-Item Budget.

6. A research paper through a shared Google document shall be initiated by the Committee Chairman. This document will include the result of the Needs Assessment Survey conducted in May 2023 to the private HEI's of Marawi City. 

7. Some highlights discussed during the "Learning Session and Extension Project Proposal Writing and Management" were shared:
  • The idea of extension is that MSU must be felt by the community where the university is located.
  • The extension must be need-driven.
  • The University ranking in the THE looks more for targeted SDG 17 in research output and extension programs.
  • An extension program is composed of several projects and/or activities that are directed toward one broader purpose or goal.
8. Some faculty engagements that can be turned into extension activities are discussed.

9. The response rate obtained in the survey are: JMM (4); JPI (5), PMTC (15), LIPCF (14), LCCI (3), and MIT (14). There are a total of 59 answered NASQs that are returned.

10. The results of the needs assessment survey are the following:
  • The top perceived important areas in doing research are the method of data collection, research design, and sampling design.
  • The top commonly used in research studies according to the respondents are percentage measure, mean/median/mode, and frequency or counts.
  • They are interested in joining a training workshop (with computer hands-on) on the following topics: Item/Reliability Analysis, Drafting Survey or Research Instrument, and Logistic Regression.
